Wandsworth Sensory Support Service is a provider of education for children and young people with Sensory Impairment.  This is an exciting opportunity to join our highly motivated and skilled team as a Specialist Support Assistant.

This post is based within a mainstream setting in West Brompton. The post holder will be working closely with a year 8 student with no vision, who accesses the national curriculum via Braille. You will be key in ensuring the child develops their ‘learning to access skills’, helping teachers within the school to create an inclusive environment that allows this student to reach their full potential.

It is crucial that the postholder is able to ensure that the lesson content and materials are made accessible in digital or tactile format (including Braille), the student is safe within practical subject - e.g. PE, Science or Design and Technology - and their independence is promoted through daily practice of their habilitation targets. The postholder will also be expected to keep abreast of continuously evolving technology in relation to visual impairment.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has high expectations, is passionate about transforming young people’s lives and has a desire to develop their career by working with children and young people with vision impairment.

The postholder will need to possess Grade 2 Braille OR have a willingness to learn and develop these skills on a continuous basis.

We can offer you:

  • A personalised induction programme
  • The opportunity to undertake recognised qualifications
  • A positive and supportive team
  • A staff wellbeing programme

The Wandsworth Sensory Support Service is a very special place to work and staff wellbeing and career progression are very important to us. In addition to our Staff Wellbeing programme, you will be provided with tailored in-house and external training appropriate to your needs and interests.
